City of Tulsa

The City of Tulsa located in northeastern Oklahoma (better known as "Green Country") was first settled by the Lockapoka Creek Indians who were driven from their native Alabama between 1828 and 1836. The discovery of oil in Red Fork in 1901 marked the beginning of the oil boom. Historically, the city was the result of the efforts of pioneer oilmen, earning it the name "The Oil Capital of the World" in 1920. With 760,000+ population, Tulsa is a modern metropolis with more than 600 oil- and gas-oriented companies. Tulsa enjoys an economic upswing due to its very strong business community coupled with a low unemployment rate of only 2.8% and a low cost of living.

Tulsa has beautiful art deco architecture and is home to several museums, historical landmarks, three universities and one community college. Tulsa hosts several cultural events that include the annual Bluegrass Festival & Chili Cook-off, the Tulsa Greenwood Jazz Festival (listed as one of the "Top 100 Things to Do in the United States) as well as the annual Oktoberfest festival, ranked by German Life magazine as one of the top five Oktoberfest's in North America and by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the highest-rated German food festivals in the United States.

Tulsa was also the site of the 2001 U.S. Golf Open Championship and is one of the few cities in the U.S. that has the distinction of hosting the U.S. Open three times (1958, 1971, 2001) and is currently negotiating its return in 2007. As Tulsa enters the 21st century, it enjoys the reputation as one of America's most livable cities.
